Frederick Carter in 1891 - England Census

So we've seen where the Carter family was in 1881 and that both William and Harriett died within a year of one another in 1885/86. Following our family pedigree the next census in England took place in 1881 finds Frederick (the branch of the family from which we are all descended) at the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys in Edmonton along with a great many other 13 year old boys. To save you some trouble deciphering the handwriting see line 6.

This is 5 years after being orphaned and it has so far been impossible to know what has happened to all of the other children. To be honest I have not spent much time researching this angle given that it is Frederick that was the direct ancestor of our branch of the family tree. And searching for female ancestors is really difficult given their habit of changing their surnames when they get married!

I've been told that Frederick and the other children were brought up by relatives after they were orphaned; whether or not this is true it is clear that he spent at least some time in an institution that was most likely actually an orphanage of sorts. I don't get the sense that this was a boarding school as I don't think that in 1891 the family would have had the financial resources to make this sort of commitment following the death of both parents. You remember that I mentioned William's father was listed in 1881 as being a wine merchant and that the family had a servant living with them; I will come back to these points so don't forget them.

At this point the trail runs dry. The next census in England took place in 1901 and I can find no record of Frederick at that time. This most likely means that he had left to join his brother in South Africa. I have been told that he only left much later so it would be good if any of you have any information about this? And does anybody know which brother he joined? I'm guessing that since the family bible ended up in South Africa it must have been the oldest of the children, William. We know from that family bible that Herbert (the younger twin) went to Australia and died there on 9 August 1901. Please let me know... and do look out for more updates to come as I tell you the story going right back to 1841.
