Today I received a response to my enquiry to the UK Ministry of Defence for information about the circumstances under which Gerhard Marquard (my Great Uncle) was shot down and killed during the Second World War.
The letter does not provide a huge amount but does provide documented facts and a further clue to follow up at the National Archives at Kew. Kew is only a short distance from where we live so I'm saving up a few of these to follow up on a trip there soon.
Gerhard was a captain in the SAAF and was seconded to the RAF. He was only 24 when he died.

Very interesting. It is amazing that they have so much information, and actually get back to you. Not sure that you would get the same result here.
certainly very intriguing, have you got the info that the "medal-man" got from Pta for Mom?
So glad you've got this far. Can't read the letter in the blog, so would like to know what it says
