B's Knees

It turns out that for the last two years the pain in my right knee has been caused by a tear in the medial meniscus. As bad as that sounds it has not actually caused me any particular distress; more like a nagging discomfort, particularly when the loud click when I stand up can be heard by people 6 feet away. But just recently after working on our floors for a weekend I have to say that the discomfort was becoming more distressing.

A visit to an orthopaedic surgeon and an MRI scan later the diagnosis is confirmed. The surgeon actually said that the diagnosis he made by manipulating the joint was one of the most obvious he had seen.

So I'm scheduled for surgery at the New Victoria hospital on Tuesday. I have to be in by 7am and I should be home by early evening. It requires a general anaesthetic though I will try to see if I can convince them to go with a local once I'm there. My surgeon says tha recovery should be good and that I should be back to normal in a couple of weeks, particularly as the surgery uses keyhole techniques.

I do remember Michael (my dad) had knee surgery on some sort of cartilege when I was quite young. I have recollections of a lot of hobbling and even crutches. I hope that 30 years have allowed generous improvements in techniques.

Which is just as good as I am flying to the US for a rather gruelling trip on 3 December (Heathrow to Seattle, Seattle to San Jose, San Francisco to London in five days). I get back home on the Saturday and we fly to South Africa on the following Wednesday.

Wish me luck. And if you are interested, more on medial meniscus tears can be found here: www.arthroscopy.com
